Two Vic govt departments to be cut

The number of Victorian government departments will be cut from nine to seven from January 1.

Premier Daniel Andrews, who was sworn in on Thursday, says the move is part of a bid to revitalise the public service.

Under the changes, a number of community portfolios will be elevated to the department of premier and cabinet, including family violence prevention and equality.

Labor plans to establish a royal commission into family violence early next year.

A new special minister of state, Gavin Jennings, will oversee government transparency and accountability, public sector administration and reform.

Mr Andrews will oversee the creation and direction of the two key new bodies, Infrastructure Victoria and Projects Victoria.

Infrastructure Victoria will develop a long-term pipeline of projects beyond election cycles while Projects Victoria will make sure the projects keep on track.

Mr Andrews will oversee the sale of the Port of Melbourne lease, which will help fund Labor's promise to remove 50 of Melbourne's worst level crossings.

He says the move will help ensure the best deal for taxpayers.

New appointments will also be made, with the government to recommend Howard Ronaldson be appointed administrator of Ambulance Victoria.

Mr Andrews has called on the board of Ambulance Victoria to submit their resignations to him by the week's end as part of his pledge to "end the war" on paramedics following a long-running industrial dispute.

The administrator is being appointed in the interim while board vacancies are filled.

The premier will refer the ambulance industrial dispute to the Fair Work Commission on Friday.

"Mr Ronaldson will be tasked with restoring public confidence in the Victorian ambulance system," Mr Andrews said.
