A man sought over a Melbourne stabbing is in a stand-off with police and may have up to four hostages at knife-point in a house, police say.

A man was found with a stab wound to his upper body in Seaford about 10am on Monday and taken to Frankston Hospital in a critical condition.

Acting on a tip that a man they sought for questioning about the incident was there, officers arrived at a home in nearby Frankston about 5.30pm.

The area was cordoned off when the man, armed with a knife, confronted police as they arrived.

"Police were not injured during the confrontation, however it is believed that four other people may still be in the property," a Victoria Police spokeswoman said.

In a separate incident, a woman was stabbed in the face at a Berwick home about 9.30am.

Her attacker - who the victim knew - is on the run and allegedly stole a car after the assault.

The woman was taken to Dandenong Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
