Two men are wanted after a shooting in Melbourne's west which forced a nearby school into lockdown.

The men were seen getting into a waiting black hatchback shortly after shots were fired near a playground outside government housing flats in Kensington on Thursday.

The nearby Holy Rosary Primary School went into lockdown after hearing shots.

Detective Inspector Stephen Cooper said investigations were ongoing, but was unable to reveal if bullets had been found, or whether a shooter had been seen or identified.

"I can't say exactly where shots have been fired but the information we have from the public is that shots have been fired," he told reporters.

Colleen Howell says she heard between four to six gunshots at 12.20pm outside the housing commission building.

"I heard gunfire - bang, bang, bang, bang," she said.

"I've lived here for 32 years and we regularly hear fireworks but this was literally gunfire."

No injuries were reported and police closed off the street while they searched for clues.
