A man beaten with a pole after a Geelong home invasion is in a serious condition after being airlifted to a Melbourne hospital.

The victim, 36, fled a unit in Corio after two men with a pole broke in and started assaulting people, police say.

The attackers chased him and beat him so viciously, he was left in a critical condition before being airlifted to the Royal Melbourne Hospital.

His condition has since been downgraded to serious.

The offenders escaped in a car and their whereabouts remains unknown.

Another man, 53, who was inside the unit at the time of the robbery, was also struck with the pole, while a 40-year-old woman was pushed to the ground but uninjured.

Paramedics were forced to wait for police to declare the area safe before treating the younger man, over fears the offenders would return.
