Turnbull pays tribute to fallen police

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has paid tribute to police killed on the job around Australia and said officers face "dangerous times".

At a national Police Remembrance Day event in Melbourne on Friday, Mr Turnbull spoke about the "brutal and senseless killing" of Queensland cop Brett Forte during a police pursuit four months ago.

"In recent times, we've had bitter reminders of the threats police face in carrying out their duties. These are dangerous times for our police services," Mr Turnbull said.

He also thanked Victorian police for their courage during Melbourne's deadly Bourke Street Mall rampage and the Brighton siege, which he said were "vicious and violent attacks ... on all of us".
