Truck ban set for right hand lane of Melbourne’s busiest freeway

Trucks will be banned from the right hand lane of Melbourne's busiest freeway, as part of a trial aimed at improving traffic flow and safety on the Monash.

The nine month trial will being on February 5, on the section of freeway between Huntingdale Road, Mount Waverley and Jacksons Road, Noble Park.

The ban mirrors similar rules already in place on the Eastern Freeway and Princess Freeway.

Acting Premier Tim Pallas said the government hoped to reduce the number of accidents and delays.

"We know that the most common cause of crashes on the Monash involve lane changes and side swipes- we want to see this reduced," he said.

Traffic officials said the Monash freeway is used by around 200,000 vehicles every day; 40,000 of which are trucks.

Cameras will be used to identify trucks that continue to drive in the right-hand lane, but drivers won't be fined.

If the trial proves successful, the ban is expected to be made permanent.
