'Ratbag' truckies dealing drugs over cab radio and using ice to pull 16-hour shifts: report

Victoria Police have revealed that 156 truck drivers tested positive for illicit drugs including speed, ice and marijuana last year.

The figures, reported in the Herald Sun, come amid claims that “ratbag” truckies are regularly using drugs while on the job and even coordinating drug deals over cab radios.

Detective Inspector Bernie Rankin told the newspaper there was no doubt drug trafficking was occurring.

“There is no doubt there is organised selling of prohibited substances in the transport industry and no doubt there are people who profit from providing drivers with their requirements,” he said.

“Unfortunately they [truckies] are tainted by the ratbags who have got absolutely no regard for road safety, other road users, themselves or their families,” he said.

An unnamed Victorian truck driver was quoted saying that the drug use was understandable given the demands of the job, when a single shift can last over 16 hours.

“Yes, some people take speed and ice – but there is always going to be rampant drug use if truckers are required to work these long hours,” the man said.

“Do you think these people are dancing and raving in their trucks? No, it’s not for fun they are using, it is a tool to do their jobs,” he said.

Heavy vehicle drivers are legally not supposed to exceed 12 hours driving per day.
