Training flights suspended after Vic crash

The father of a Victorian girl teenage girl killed while training to become a pilot has visited the site where she began her final flight.

The 19-year-old died when her single-engine Cessna aircraft crashed into a hill at Millbrook, near Ballarat on Tuesday afternoon.

RMIT University vice-chancellor Martin Bean confirmed the "devastating news" and said the student was on a solo flight from the university's Point Cook aviation training site when the crash occurred.

"This morning, I met the student's father at RMIT's Point Cook flight training centre ... as a father, I can only begin to imagine the pain he is feeling at this time," he said in a statement on Wednesday.

"I have also been spending time with aviation staff and students, who have gathered at Point Cook to share their grief and their memories."

He confirmed operations at the site had been suspended until further notice.

The facility trains local and international students to become pilots in a fleet of 13 Cessna aircraft.

Counselling will be provided to staff and students affected by her death, Training and Skills Minister Steve Herbert said.

"It is tragic to lose anyone but it is all the more heartbreaking when someone is taken so young and under such tragic circumstances," he said in a statement.

RMIT will help the Air Transport Safety Bureau, the Civil Aviation Safety Authority and emergency services.
