Long and frustrating delays are on the cards for commuters across Melbourne over the coming weeks as construction ramps up on road and rail projects.

What is planned on Melbourne's roads?
Four outbound lanes on the West Gate Bridge will close for 10 days between Boxing Day and January 4, as work ramps on upgrades.
It will leave only one outbound lane open to traffic, and delays of up to 90 minutes are expected.
There will also be traffic lane closures as construction continues on new bike lanes on St Kilda Road.

Works will get underway on Footscray Road, Wurundjeri Way and the West Gate Freeway at Williamstown Road between January and February.
The Monash Freeway will be closed in both directions at Warrigal Road for overnight works for four nights in January.
The Princes Freeway will close overnight between the Princes Highway and Beaconsfield Interchange between January 9-24.

What is planned on Melbourne's train lines?
Three major train stations will be closed between January 2-15 as crews will work to upgrade smoke detection, extraction and sprinkler systems.
Flagstaff, Melbourne Central and Parliament stations will all close with no trains running through the City Loop during that period.
Southern Cross and Flinders Street stations will remain open, with trains running to and from these stations.
The state government said the works will help "better manage potential emergency situations in the underground rail system".

The works will allow crews to respond quicker to intruders and minimise and reduce delays to the network.
Due to the works, buses will replace trains on the Hurstbridge, Alamein and Sandringham Lines.
Sections of the Cranbourne, Pakenham, Frankston, Stony Point and Sandringham lines will be down from January 4 as crews prepare the tracks for when the Metro Tunnel opens in 2025.
Buses will replace trains on sections of the Belgrave and Lilydale lines from February 17 to late May to remove the Mont Albert and Surrey Hills level crossings.
