Train pain for some Vic V/Line commuters

Rail commuters from Victoria's Gippsland region face delays on Monday as V/Line investigates why one of its high speed country trains failed to trigger a boom gate.

VLocity trains, the newest in the V/Line fleet, have been banned temporarily from suburban rail lines in Melbourne after it's understood a V/Line train failed to trigger boom gates and warning signals at a level crossing in Dandenong on Friday.

VLocity trains cannot run beyond Pakenham, the start of the suburban portion of the Traralgon line.

Public Transport Victoria says coaches will replace train services.

"The VLocity technical investigation will continue throughout this week as we work to minimise disruptions and safely restore services as quickly as possible," a PTV spokesman said.

"V/Line is working to minimise disruptions on the Traralgon line and will provide as many coaches as possible between Traralgon and Southern Cross.

"V/Line services on the Geelong, Ballarat, Bendigo and Seymour lines will operate to a regular timetable."

The suspension comes after V/Line was forced to pull Vlocity trains from service last week because their wheels were wearing out at a rapid rate and needed to be replaced.

Engineers are investigating the cause of the wheel problem.

V/Line says customers on all lines should check its website before travelling and allow additional travel time.
