Traffic gridlock on Melbourne freeway

Two smashes and a break-down are causing traffic chaos on a Melbourne freeway.

Drivers leaving the city via the Eastern Freeway have been told to expect lengthy delays as emergency crews work to clear three incidents.

There is a two car collision in the centre median at Burke Road which is causing delays both inbound and outbound, VicRoads says.

Another lane is closed near the Bulleen Road exit and a collision at the Eastlink tunnel has just been cleared.

Traffic is gridlocked for about 30 kilometres, from the beginning of the freeway to the start of Eastlink.

"Current delays are back to Hoddle St on-ramps," VicRoads said in a statement just before 6.30pm on Wednesday.

"Drivers are advised to allow extra time as heavy delays are expected or avoid the area if possible."
