Tracks replaced as V/Line crisis drags on

Eight hundred metres of track on Victoria's new Regional Rail Link is being ripped up this weekend.

The track is being blamed for damaging wheels on V/Line's VLocity trains, and overnight on Friday was torn up and replaced between North Melbourne and Southern Cross stations.

V/Line says the work will be complete by the first trains on Monday morning.

The track being torn up was laid just two years ago.

Sections on the Geelong and Bendigo lines will also be replaced in the coming weeks.

V/Line faces months of replacing trains with buses because of the wheel wear problem - which is still under investigation - and a problem with boom gates failing to trigger on regional lines.

Monash University rail experts will hand down a report in March, but trains are not expected to resume normal services until June.
