Vic teens steal police car, crash into bus

Police will investigate whether two unlicensed youths who allegedly crashed a stolen, unmarked police car into a bus in Melbourne had been drinking or using drugs.

The teenage boys, both aged under 18, were taken to hospital in a serious condition after being trapped in the stolen car following the accident at Box Hill South about 1pm on Friday.

Police allege the car was stolen from outside a private address in Hughesdale on Thursday night.

The accident happened after a police officer approached the stolen car, which was parked across a street.

Detective Inspector Anthony Cecchin says the officer was forced to jump out of the way as the car hurtled towards him.

The car then collided with a bus, which did not have any passengers.

"If there were (passengers), we would have had a major catastrophe on our hands," Det Insp Cecchin told reporters.

"This could have easily turned into a fatality.

"When we look at the damage that's been caused, I'm amazed it hasn't."

The bus driver, aged in his 30s, received minor injuries and was taken to hospital.

Neither of the alleged occupants of the stolen car has a driver's licence and they will face several serious charges, Det Insp Cecchin said.

"Really, it highlights the incidents of young teenage drivers driving perhaps under the influence of drugs and alcohol," he said.

"It's a dangerous mix."
