Homicide probes attack on Vic children

A Melbourne man arrested over the assault of three children is also being questioned over the death of a woman whose body was found dumped in a car park three weeks ago.

A man, who media are naming as 34-year-old Bassam Raad, was arrested at the Broadmeadows house on Monday night and remains in custody.

Raad was acquitted in a high-profile terror trial in 2008.

He was among 12 men accused of planning terror attacks in Melbourne.

Family violence charges could be laid against him following Monday night's assault, police say.

Three children were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries from the home.

Police on Tuesday said the arrested man is known to the injured children.

Victoria Police spokeswoman Natalie Webster said homicide detectives also searched the house to see if there were possible links to an "existing active investigation".

No death has been reported and police have not confirmed if they know the whereabouts of the children's mother.

The Cohuna Street house is just over 2km away from the tennis club car park where a woman's battered body was found wrapped in a quilt last month.

A distinctive headscarf was found nearby and police said she was of Middle Eastern decent.

Despite a nationwide call for help, detectives have been unable to identify her but later revealed they believed she was a mother.

Last week, Homicide Inspector Mick Hughes said he believed the woman was a victim of family violence and the killer would have had help in disposing her body.

On Tuesday afternoon, a masked man drove near the home in a blue car and quickly sped off after seeing police, mounting a curb and narrowly missing a parked car as he left.

Police pursued him shortly after.

Neighbour Sina Iosefa was shocked to see so many police in the usually quiet neighbourhood.

"I just saw the police around, it's scary. You never know what happens just next door," she told AAP on Tuesday.
