CCTV cameras have captured the moment a  gas pipe ruptured, injuring two workers in Melbourne’s north-west this afternoon.

Emergency services were called to the vicinity of Osborne Street in Maddingley, near Bacchus Marsh, about 1.30pm following reports of an explosion.

Video shows the moment the blast sent manhole covers flying into the air.

Witnesses said they “felt” the impact of the blast, and ran for cover.

A teenager and another man who had been working on a drain underground were caught in the fray.

The teen was taken to The Alfred Hospital in a serious condition with burns. His condition has since improved to stable.

The other man suffered less severe injuries, and was taken to a local hospital.

The incident was triggered by a ruptured gas pipe, which then caused further explosions.

Worksafe and Country Fire Authority (CFA) are now investigating.

Two schools and a nursing home were evacuated during the incident as a precaution.

Motorists continue to be advised to avoid the area, with road blocks expected to put in place.
