A Melbourne taxi driver has been released without charge after handing himself in to police over a hit-and-run that's left a 27-year-old man with serious internal injuries.

The 50-year-old cabbie went to a police station after an incident at Brunswick on Saturday night.

"The Hillside man has spoken with police and has been released without charge pending further enquiries," a police statement reads.

"The Brunswick West man remains in hospital in a stable condition."

Witnesses told police the two men had a verbal argument before the driver got in the car and the other man tried to follow.

The Brunswick West man was dragged about 30 metres before getting pulled underneath the taxi, which kept on going.
