Tang widow won't forgive Vic officers

The widow of a man left to die by Victorian police, who failed to provide medical treatment, says she will never forgive the officers involved.

Jenny Tang says her husband was treated like a dog before he died and his experience was the worst thing a family could go through.

Gong Ling Tang, 53, was arrested for public drunkenness in May 2010 and despite complaining to police about stomach pains while in custody at the Dandenong Police Station, he was released without treatment and later died in hospital.

The coroner found on Tuesday that Mr Tang was not in a fit state to have been released.

Mrs Tang said she was grateful to the coroner for revealing the terrible events.

"My daughter, my sisters and I have suffered four-and-a-half years of grief, not only because of my husband's death but because of the inhumane way he was treated," Mrs Tang said in a statement read by her lawyer Genna Angelowitsch.

"It was devastating to have the world see my husband crawl out of a cell without a hand to help."

Mrs Tang thanked Victoria Police deputy chief commissioner Tim Cartwright for his apology, but said compassionate police would have made a difference.

"The coroner found that more competent, diligent and compassionate police officers would have preserved my husband's welfare and dignity," she said.

"My daughter and I miss him terribly, and I shall never forgive those police officers for the way my husband was treated."
