A police station in north-west Victoria has been evacuated after officers realised a substance taken from a crash scene was unknown and volatile.

The Campbell Street station was evacuated at 6.15am after a white powder collected from a crash scene on the Murray Valley Highway at Lake Boga last night was determined to be volatile, Victoria Police said in a statement.

The bomb response unit had been called in to remove the powder and a possible explosive device from a car abandoned at the scene.

Police initially believed the substance was drugs.

Officers were evacuated from the station as a precaution, and have been relocated while the building is made safe.

Traffic diversions are also in place near the crash scene.
