Suspicious fire in southwest Melbourne

A house in Melbourne's southwest has been extensively damaged in what's believed to be a deliberately lit fire.

Firefighters were called to the house in Altona North early on Christmas morning and found the five people who were inside had escaped safely.

The blaze took about 40 minutes to extinguish and police are continuing their investigations.
