Two motorbikes racing erratically at high speeds narrowly missed a pedestrian in Melbourne's south.

One of the riders later crashed and was taken to hospital, while the other escaped.

Concerned drivers made calls to triple-zero to report the driving of the two motorcyclists along the Nepean Highway in Mentone just after 9am on Wednesday.

"Police attempted to intercept the riders but they refused to pull over," Victoria Police spokeswoman Belinda Nolan said.

One of the motorcyclists was involved in a collision just before 10am and allegedly fled the scene, she said.

The two riders narrowly missed a pedestrian after running a red light.

A 22-year-old Langwarrin man was later arrested in the garage of a nearby house and taken to The Alfred hospital under police guard with non-life-threatening injuries.

Police are still searching for the second motorcyclist, who was wearing a black jacket and riding a black and white motorcycle with a handwritten number plate reading "UPON1".
