Speed camera attacked and damaged in Melbourne

A man in a grey hoodie has damaged two tyres of a mobile traffic camera in Melbourne's north.

The search is on for a man police said approached a parked car with a mobile speed camera mounted on top and slashed the rear tyre in Fakwner about 5pm yesterday.

The man, believed to be aged between 30 and 40, then also damaged the front tyre before running eastbound on the southern side of Major Road.

The operator was not injured.

Mobile speed cameras use a radar beam to detect the speed of cars passing in either direction and takes a photograph if it registers the driver going over the speed limit.

Registered owners then receive a fine in the mail.

Last year, there was a spate of attacks targeting speed camera vehicles and operators across Victoria.

In footage released by police today, a man investigators want to speak with is caught on CCTV glancing sideward at a house.

His face is just visible through his hooded jumper.

He is described as being about 175cm tall.
