Kids, govt give Melb showbags thumbs up

The showbags on offer at the 2015 Royal Melbourne Show have received a big tick from kids and the government.

Peppa Pig, Frozen and the Avengers were most popular among the sugar-filled treats snapped up by 30 children at a showbag preview event hosted by the charity Very Special Kids.

Nine-year-old Sienna said she rated showbags by how many toys they had but she still liked the chocolate-focused Bertie Beetle bag.

"I've had it once, it's a good one," she told AAP on Wednesday.

Five-year-old Dan chose an Avengers bag and enjoyed its Spiderman glove, Captain America shield and Ironman mask.

"I like Ironman best because he can fly," he said.

Consumer Affairs has checked all 363 showbags on offer at this year's show, and says a handful were withdrawn or needed modifications due to insecure batteries which could become choking hazards.

"There were a few bags with toys which could 'projectile missile' their parts ... so they have been removed as well," Consumer Affairs Minister Jane Garrett said.

More than 500,000 people are expected through the gates for the 11-day show, which kicks off on September 19.
