A man who allegedly tried to kill his father with a knife has faced a Melbourne court without a lawyer, saying he did not see the need for one.

Hector Bruno, 41, is accused of attempting to murder his 65-year-old father, also named Hector Bruno, at a home at regional Greendale on Thursday night.

"Mr Bruno, do you have a lawyer?" Magistrate Simon Zebrowski asked Bruno when he faced Melbourne Magistrates' Court on Friday.

"No. I chose not to," the defendant replied.

"Any reason?" the magistrate asked.

"I didn't see the need," Bruno said.

Mr Bruno was flown to hospital with abdominal wounds after the incident and remains in intensive care.

Bruno was arrested at the scene and charged with attempted murder and intentionally causing injury.

He was remanded to appear in Ballarat Magistrates' Court for a committal mention on October 14.
