The court was told Tamvakis would need medication for depression while in custody.
Tamvakis has been in police custody since he was arrested on Wednesday, a day after one of his sisters found their mother in a front room of her Bentleigh home, the victim of a violent assault.
The alarm was raised when Ms Tamvakis failed to pick up her grandchildren from school on Tuesday afternoon.
