Vic Maccas blaze, Hamburglar was a suspect

It was an unhappy meal for customers at a Melbourne McDonald's who were forced to evacuate after a fire flame-grilled the roof of the store.

Firefighters arrived at the store in Dingley Village on Wednesday morning and found the roof space on fire and smoke billowing.

"Crews tackled the fire, which was in the roof space of the restaurant, and were able to extinguish the blaze through an internal attack," operations officer Don Wilkie said on Wednesday.

CFA firefighter Jason Petrovich, who is also the manager of the Maccas store, was praised by colleagues for his "crucial insider knowledge" that kept the fire contained to the roof.

"The Hamburglar was considered a suspect but has since been cleared," the CFA said in statement.

A McDonald's spokeswoman said the company is yet to assess the extent of the damage.

"We don't know at this stage how long the restaurant will be closed," she said.

"Thankfully, all our staff and customers are safe and well. We are really pleased with how the restaurant staff handled the situation."

The MFB and CFA were both on scene fighting the blaze, which was next to a Coles Express petrol station.
