A Victorian town is leading the way as the first Australian region to have a medicinal cannabis oil manufacturing plant.

In an industry milestone, Wonthaggi-based MediPharm Labs has successfully exported the largest shipment of cannabis oil from Australia to Germany, helping patients with chronic illnesses and cancer treatments.

The lab where testing takes place manufactures large-scale production of cannabis oil.

Twelve thousand units have been shipped internationally, with more expected to be delivered in the coming months.

"The fact that we are now exporting large volumes of cannabis material internationally helps define Australia as a pharmaceutical hub within the cannabis industry," Adam Miller from MediPharm Labs strategy said.

"It's an exciting industry as a lot of clinical trials going on at the moment, a lot of emerging markets overseas," Andrew Cormack from MediPharm Labs production said.

Cannabis oil has been permitted for therapeutic use in Germany since 2017, meaning better pain relief for patients with medications that could substitute for other medicines.

"Pain, Parkinson's disease, epilepsy, mood disorders, just to name a few," Mr Miller said.

To date, the company has sold more than 50,000 units of cannabis materials to the Australian market, with more than 100,000 approvals granted by the TGA for patients to use cannabis across Australia.

"Currently soft gels are not available over the counter but over the coming years, our company is at the forefront of being able to produce that product for consumers," Mr Cormack said.

Over-the-counter medicinal cannabis will soon be available at Australian pharmacies.
