Man hands himself in over police shooting

A man wanted after shots were fired at police during a stand-off in Melbourne has handed himself in to authorities.

A gunman fired multiple times at police before fleeing his Melbourne home, where officers found a clandestine drug lab.

Police were searching for 33-year-old Nghi Le after someone shot at them while they were preparing to raid a home in St Albans about 6am on Monday.

Assistant Commissioner Stephen Fontana said Mr Le walked into the Spencer Street police complex before 4pm.

"He's since handed himself in just a short time ago...he turned up here probably about 15, 20 minutes ago with his solicitor," Mr Fontana told ABC 774 radio.

A nearby primary school school temporarily went into lockdown as police searched the area.

Special Operations Group officers stormed the house about 10am, but the gunman had already fled.

Police said a clandestine laboratory and precursor chemicals believed to be for drug manufacturing were inside.

The raid was part of a wider drug sting targeting an international drug syndicate, with five other properties raided at the same time.

Drugs and guns were seized during the raids, with eight people arrested.
