Seats still too close in Vic vote count

Counting of first preference votes is almost finished in Frankston and Prahran but the seats remain too close to call a week after the Victorian election.

Liberal Clem Newton-Brown's lead over Labor's Neil Pharaoh in Prahran dropped to a mere 60 votes on Friday night, on two candidate preferred results.

But Labor's Paul Edbrooke continued pulling ahead of Liberal Sean Armistead in Frankston and was up by 337.

The tightly contested seat of Bentleigh was claimed by Labor's Nick Staikos earlier on Friday as he edged 357 votes ahead of sitting Liberal MP Elizabeth Miller, with 91.9 per cent of votes counted.

"Thank you to the people of Bentleigh for their trust in electing me as their local member. I will not let them down," Mr Staikos said on Twitter.

He was up 387 votes on Friday night.

The VEC has formally declared 35 candidates elected in districts won by absolute majority.

More will come on Monday, which is also the last day declaration votes can be admitted, and formal preference distributions will take place in districts where no candidate has an absolute majority.

Labor has won 46 seats and the coalition 38, with one Green, one independent and two seats still in doubt.
