Man quizzed on Vic woman's disappearance

A man is being questioned by detectives in Melbourne while forensic experts comb his northeast Victorian house for clues into the disappearance of missing mother Karen Chetcuti.

A 48-year-old man was arrested on Sunday morning after an alleged police pursuit in the Melbourne suburb of Ringwood, police say.

Police are talking to the man in relation to the disappearance of the 49-year-old Whorouly mother of two, who has been missing since Tuesday night.

The man, who was arrested alone on Sunday morning following a marathon pursuit through Melbourne, is also suspected of being involved in the reported kidnapping of a 48-year-old Whorouly man on Saturday afternoon.

Police visited the arrested man's house on Saturday but he wasn't home and could not be located.

A crime scene was established on his property on Sunday morning.

Police also would not confirm if the man arrested is Ms Chetcuti's neighbour, who told media outlets on Friday that he spoke to her over his fence at 9.15pm on Tuesday.

"When I saw her she seemed happy. I was picking tomatoes," he told the Herald Sun.

"It's very stressful. I didn't have anything to do with it."

Police and the State Emergency Service were searching Whorouly and Myrtleford on Sunday, and police divers have begun searching the Ovens River and wells on properties around Ms Chetcuti's house.

The last confirmed sighting of Ms Chetcuti was at the Whorouly Hotel at 7.30pm on Tuesday and her burnt-out car was found 20km away in Myrtleford on Thursday.

The disappearance has shocked the tiny town of about 500 people.

"We're just devastated with everything that has been going on. We just hope they find Karen well somewhere," Whorouly man Rob Kneebone told reporters on Sunday.
