Police are appealing for witnesses who may have seen the crash. (9NEWS) 

A Melbourne schoolgirl has been critically injured after being hit by a garbage truck in Langwarrin south of Melbourne.

The 17-year-old was crossing Cranbourne Road after 8am when she was struck.

She was airlifted to the Royal Melbourne Hospital with life-threatening injuries and remains in a serious condition.

The 54-year-old Frankston truck driver has been assisting police with their inquiries and has since been released pending further investigation. 

The truck belongs to the council’s waste disposal contracter, Solo Resource Recovery.
