Salmonella cases from Melbourne hotel's high tea hit 17

Victoria's's health department has confirmed 17 cases of salmonella linked to high tea at a luxury Melbourne hotel.

A health department spokesman says about 60 people - or about half the guests - became sick after high tea events at The Langham on July 11 and 12, with seven requiring hospitalisation.

A pregnant woman celebrating her baby shower was among those struck down, with doctors forced to deliver her baby five weeks early.

The newborn suffered breathing problems as a result of a traumatic birth.

Results from the hotel's food samples were still days away, the health spokesman said.

But he said the fact there had been no new cases indicated the cause of the outbreak was no longer there.
