Vic police still unable to identify body

The body of a man might have been lying beside a creek in Melbourne's west for weeks before it was discovered.

Police have been unable to identify the body, found by walkers at Mount Cottrell on Thursday afternoon.

An autopsy on Friday revealed the man is of Asian descent who may have been aged in his 20s.

Detective Inspector Mick Hughes said the death might have occurred at another location and his body dumped by the creek.

"We believe he's probably been there a couple of weeks," Det Insp Hughes told reporters on Friday.

"I think you'd have to know the area to even find it, let alone come down and be confident that you'd be able to drop a body off and leave it there without being detected."

Investigators are hoping someone might have seen a vehicle in the area, near Dukelows Road.

They are also hoping someone might be able to identify the man.

"We haven't identified him as yet, so we haven't been able to notify family," Det Insp Hughes said.
