Rare possum photographed in Vic

They're endangered, but the Leadbeater's Possum isn't camera shy.

One of the rare mammals has been photographed frolicking with other native wildlife in a Victorian state park.

The image was captured on one of about 100 cameras erected in forests near Broadford, Noojee and Powelltown to evaluate the success of a fox baiting program.

The baiting program, which has been running since 2012, is aimed at stopping foxes from preying on small mammals.

Forest planner Emily Borton says the infra-red cameras take photos of animals day and night.

It's quite surprising that a Leadbeater's Possum was captured in one of the snaps, she says.

"Our cameras are set up to capture ground-dwelling mammals and the Leadbeater's Possum is rarely known to forage on the ground," Ms Borton said on Thursday.

Bandicoots, wallabies, wombats and a lace monitor as well as foxes and feral cats were photographed during the assessment.

Data will now be analysed by Victoria's environment department.
