Rare frog eggs released in Vic

Melbourne Zoo is fighting to save a little frog from croaking it.

The zoo was the first to breed the rare black and yellow Southern Corroboree frog and will send off on Tuesday a batch of 680 eggs to be released on Mount Kosciuszko.

The eggs were laid in late summer and are almost ready to hatch.

They will spend nine months in the national park as tadpoles before changing into tiny frogs in the spring.

Outside protected areas, there are as few as 20 of the frogs left in the wild.

The species has become endangered due to the Chytrid fungus, which is having a drastic effect on many frog populations around the world.

This is the third batch of eggs the zoo has released from their breeding program.
