A whole Melbourne city block could become smoke free under plans to be revealed by the city council.

Popular shopping precinct QV Melbourne will be come the largest area to date that the council has identified as a possible smoke-free zone, with consultation on the proposal to start on Thursday.

Earlier this month, the council also announced plans to make the iconic City Square a smoke-free area.

Lord Mayor Robert Doyle says the council would speak with businesses, residents and users of the space, but expected feedback to be positive.

"No one wants to walk through groups of people smoking and no one wants to sit next to people smoking while they are having lunch," Mr Doyle told 3AW radio on Thursday.

"Let's face it, the MCG wasn't always smoke free and now we don't blink an eye - it's the way of the world."

Once consultations on the two city spaces are concluded, Mr Doyle said the council would set their focus on banning smoking in outside dining areas.
