Flight bound for Melbourne forced to turn around due to technical issue

A Qantas flight bound for Melbourne has landed safely in Mildura after a technical issue forced it to turn around shortly after take-off.

Flight QF2079 had to make a priority landing at the airport in regional Victoria shortly following take-off at about 10.45am.

Flight map data showed the plane departing from Mildura Airport before flying in circles several times and returning to the airport.

The flight landed safely and no passengers or crew were injured.

Emergency services met the aircraft on arrival, which is standard procedure during a priority landing, Qantas said.

The airline has not revealed what caused the technical issue, but clarified that it was not an emergency landing.

"Our pilots are highly trained to handle situations like this, and the flight has since landed safely in Mildura," a Qantas spokesperson said.

"We appreciate this would have been an unsettling experience for customers and thank them for their understanding."

The airline is working to place passengers on alternative flights.

Qantas engineers will inspect the aircraft before it returns to service.
