Australian actress Maggie Kirkpatrick, who played the Freak in the original Prisoner series, says she will fight historic child sex charges.

The 74-year-old will face a Melbourne court next month charged with the indecent assault of a 13-year-old girl in the 1980s.

"I need to go to court to have this ridiculous situation quashed. Allegations have been levelled at me, yes. Are they true? Absolutely not," Kirkpatrick told News Corp Australia.

"The evidence is in the court. I don't think it's appropriate that I say any more."

It's believed the alleged victim was not connected to the entertainment industry.

Victoria police have confirmed a 74-year-old NSW woman has been charged with two counts of indecent assault and one of gross indecency with a person under 16 years.

The matter will be heard in the Melbourne Magistrates Court on August 19.

Kirkpatrick shot to fame after she won a role as a prison officer in Australian soap opera Prisoner back in the 1980s.

Since then she has appeared in television shows All Saints, Pizza, Blue Heelers and Water Rats.

Most recently she had a role in the theatre musical Wicked.
