Three young children are among five people who have been seriously injured in a head-on collision on the Princes Highway this evening.

A 32-year-old woman was travelling west on the highway just out of Traralgon, 160 kilometres east of Melbourne, just after 6pm when she collided with a Holden Colorado travelling eastbound.

She sustained serious injuries and was airlifted to hospital.

The driver of the Holden, a 29-year-old woman, and the three young children she was travelling with were also seriously injured.

She was taken by ambulance to hospital, while the children – who are all aged under ten – were airlifted to the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne.

The incident occurred about five kilometres east of Wilmot Court.

La Trobe Highway Patrol officers are calling on people who witnessed the crash or who may have dash cam footage to come forward.
