Man dies at popular Melbourne beach amid summer heatwave

A man has died after he was pulled from water at a popular Melbourne hot spot.

Paramedics were called to the Port Melbourne beach about 12.30pm shortly after the man was discovered face down in the water.

Lifesavers were patrolling on boat when they noticed the man in his 80s unresponsive. He was unable to be revived after he was pulled onto the sand.

It's understood the man suffered a medical episode and his death is not being treated as suspicious.

With beaches expected to be busy over the coming days, life guards have asked Victorians to remain vigilant and alert around water.

It comes as a man and woman died yesterday after they were pulled from the water unresponsive in Mallacoota, about 515 kilometres from Melbourne.
