Police probe alleged love triangle after dispute between neighbours leaves one man dead

An alleged love triangle involving neighbours is being investigated by police after a late-night argument left one man dead and another injured in Melbourne’s east.

Emergency services were called to reports of a “dispute” between two men at a property on Penhyrn Avenue in Croydon about 2.10am on Monday.

Peter Duss, 79, was found dead at the scene.

A 57-year-old man was arrested and taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries to his upper body. He remained in hospital under police guard on Monday evening.

Police say the men are known to each other.

Homicide squad detectives are investigating if tension over an alleged affair is what led to the violence.

No charges have been laid.

It’s understood Duss had lived at the home with his wife for close to 40 years.

She is now staying with nearby relatives.

“I can’t comprehend how she is going to cope with this,” friend Gillian Bysher told 9News.

Neighbours say they were disturbed to hear the commotion on what is normally a quiet street.

“It’s the last thing you’d expect in this area,” resident Peter Molloy said.

“A lot of us have been living here for many years ... neighbours are very friendly, and we’ve never had anything like this.”
