Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews calls out Prime Minister Tony Abbott over blame billboard

Prime Minister Tony Abbott's billboard complaining about Melbourne traffic will not get anyone to work faster, says Premier Daniel Andrews.

Instead, the Victorian premier says the prime minister should meet with him when he comes to Melbourne, rather than put up big posters.

Mr Abbott unveiled a billboard in Melbourne's east on Saturday blaming Labor for traffic congestion after the government dumped the East West Link road tunnel.

"The next time he's in town, rather than spend time unveiling a billboard, why don't we sit down and talk about making you the infrastructure prime minister you keep calling yourself?" Mr Andrews said.

"In my judgment, lies are not leadership, broken promises are not leadership and cheap stunts are not leadership either.

"We should get on and work together, that's what Victorians want."

Mr Andrews said Victoria was having positive discussions with the federal government about the proposed Western Distributor, a new toll road proposal that will connect the West Gate Freeway with CityLink.

He said he has not spoken to Mr Abbott about the project in recent days.

The federal budget called for Victoria to return $1.5 billion it has received for the now-axed East West Link.

But Mr Abbott conceded on Saturday the money would probably be available for other big Victorian road projects.

"But the money can't just sit there idle without them doing anything," he said.
