Two people have been killed in separate Victorian crashes.

A 41-year-old man from the Melbourne suburb of Oakleigh died after his vehicle veered into a fence, hit a tree and came to rest in the front yard of a house in Moorabbin about 1.15pm on Tuesday, police say.

He was taken to The Alfred hospital but later died.

Earlier on Tuesday, a 40-year-old woman was killed when the car in which she was a passenger collided with a truck on the Calder Alternative Highway at Lockwood in central Victoria.

She died at the scene.

The 80-year-old woman driving the car was airlifted to hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Police said both women were from Maryborough, a small town in the state's northwest.

They said it appeared the car failed to give way but were seeking witnesses to the accident, which happened just after 9.30am.

Victoria's provisional 2015 road toll stands at 18, compared with 12 at the same time last year.
