Man convicted of rape in Croatia tracked down in Melbourne

Waleed Latif, one of three Australians who pleaded guilty to raping a backpacker in Croatia, stayed silent when he was intercepted by A Current Affair in a Melbourne cinema but he was defended by his young female companion.

The trio managed to avoid jail after paying $30,000 in compensation to the 17-year-old victim's family, and have been in hiding since their return to Australia last month.

While Latif ducked questions while standing at the confectionary counter, his female friend recorded reporter Reid Butler as he trailed the pair into the cinema.

"If it was rape, why would he only pay $10,000?" she asked.

"What feral girl would pay, would accept $10,000?"

Latif and his cinema date had tickets to see the film Zoolander 2.

Latif, Dylan Djohan and Ashwin Kumar pleaded guilty to raping the 17-year-old Norwegian teenager in a nightclub toilet in the coastal town of Split.

The woman said she was dragged into a cubicle before she broke free of the men and fled.

The three men told police the sexual activity they engaged in with the woman was voluntary.

Under a plea deal, the men received a one-year suspended jail sentence and each paid the woman's family $10,200.

They faced 15 years in jail before the deal was finalised.
