Odds narrow for warm, windy Cup Day

Warm, a little windy and a chance of a shower late in the day - that's the early weather forecast for this year's Melbourne Cup.

The first Tuesday in November is notoriously a mixed bag of weather in Melbourne, a city already notorious for its changeable weather.

This year's Melbourne Cup Day is no exception.

The more than 100,000 punters expected to attend Flemington Racecourse can expect a top temperature of 29C, the Bureau of Meteorology predicts.

There is a 30 per cent chance of a shower later in the day.

The wind may prove tricky for milliners and fashionistas, though.

East to northeasterly winds of 15 to 20km/h are expected to increase to 40km/h before shifting westerly 20 to 25km/h later.

At Flemington Racecourse on Wednesday, the turf was in pristine condition and the track's famed roses were blooming as the finalists for the Myer fashions on the field competition were announced.
