Parts of crashed plane found off Victoria

Parts of a plane that plunged into the sea off Victoria's coast have been found, but there's no sign yet of the body of one of the four people killed in the crash.

Police say searchers have found the engine block, a propeller and part of the fuselage of the Piper Cherokee that came down in bad weather on Friday, killing all four on board.

The wreckage was found about 4km offshore between Barwon Heads and Point Lonsdale, police say.

Divers are waiting for more favourable weather before they head to the sea floor to examine the wreckage site, where an exclusion zone has been established at the request of the Victorian coroner's office.

The four were killed when the aircraft went down off Point Lonsdale on Friday during a flight from Melbourne's Moorabbin Airport to King Island in Tasmania.

The bodies of three of the victims were recovered on Friday and the fourth may still be inside the fuselage.

The victims' names have not been released but it's believed Daniel Flinn, 55, Donald Hateley, 68, and Ian Chamberlain and his partner Dianne Bradley, both aged in their 60s, died in the crash.

Wreckage has washed up on the shore but police believe the fuselage is about 30 metres down.

The three men were all licensed private pilots, but it's not clear who was flying.

The hunt for the fuselage has proved difficult, even with sonar technology.

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau is investigating.
