Two Good Samaritans tried to save a 12-year-old girl who died at a Victoria beach yesterday evening, and managed to save her 13-year-old friend.

The two girls were swimming at Collendina Beach in Ocean Grove just after 6pm when they got into difficulty.

Local resident and nurse Elise Van Wegan dived in to help.

"The waves were too intense and so we couldn't stay together. I didn't think that I was going to get back at one point but I'm glad that I did," she said.

A man also jumped in and managed to pull the 13-year-old girl from the water.

Vam Wegan and the man were both taken to hospital to be treated for hypothermia.

The 12-year-old, a Year 7 student from Bellarine Secondary College was winched out of the waves by Police Airwing, but did not survive.

The drowning has prompted warnings from Surf Life Saving Australia.

"I think generally with all locations conditions can change very quickly it can change in an instant so we really want to make sure people are assessing their own limitations," a Surf Life Saving spokesperson said.
