No compromise to public safety: cop union

Public safety will not be compromised should Victoria's police carry through with threatened industrial action, their union has assured.

The widespread action includes a ban on unpaid overtime, police cars with flashing lights parked at intersections with speed cameras and a halt on processing speed camera tickets.

"Our members, through every industrial campaign over a hundred years, have never compromised public safety," Police Association of Victoria secretary Ron Iddles said.

He said the action would instead target Victoria Police management and hit the government's coffers.

The union has set a deadline of November 30 to reach an acceptable pay deal.

On Thursday it formally rejected an offer of 2.5 per cent annual pay rises over four years because it wants a three-year deal with five per cent annual rises.

The union says Victoria should also match all other states by paying officers penalty rates.

"Why should our members work on a public holiday for zero other than their normal pay?" Mr Iddles said.

"Every other police officer in Australia is paid a penalty rate."
