A high-tech New York-style crime surveillance centre could help Victoria Police fight crime across Melbourne.

The Victoria Police Monitoring and Assessment Centre, to open by early 2017, will be modelled on New York's Real Time Crime Centre that includes more than 8000 cameras and gunshot sensors.

The Real Time Crime Centre supports officers on the ground by analysing data and providing instant access to criminal records, and the Domain Awareness surveillance system helps predict and prevent crime.

Wearing a bulletproof vest, Premier Daniel Andrews rode along with some of New York's finest during his official US visit on Sunday, before being briefed by counter-terrorism and intelligence specialists at the New York Police Department.

"NYPD officers have already been using iPads for some years now, so they have real time information when they need it most," Mr Andrews said.

"We are proud to have made a similar investment for Victoria Police."
