New Vic laws to tackle teen crime

NEW VICTORIAN LAWS TO TACKLE TEEN CRIME

* Increased maximum jail term for children from three years to four years

* New offence for adults who lure young people to commit crimes

* New Youth Control Order gives magistrates more power to restrict convicted children in sentencing

* Orders can include curfews, bans on associating with certain people, and requirements to go to school or work

* More intensive supervision means young people will have to report to police and the Health Department more often

* Youth bail supervision will be extended statewide

* After hours assessment service will move to a 24-hour model

* Where possible the same magistrate will oversee all proceedings relating to a young offender

* More guidance to magistrates about when to elevate a serious Children's Court case to the County or Supreme courts

* Legislation to be introduced in 2017.
