New blitz on Vic koala population

Koalas in Victoria's Cape Otway region will be given fertility control and health checks during a two-week blitz.

Female koalas will get hormone implants to manage breeding rates and minimise overpopulation next spring and summer, the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning says.

Almost 500 koala's were relocated to Cape Otway in 2015 but monitoring in February revealed density in some parts of the region was too high.

Locations with the highest densities will be targeted, with a focus on private properties, where koala numbers are now reaching 11 per hectare.
